Lagos Islanders hire Adekunle Binuyo as General Manager

The Lagos Islanders have hired Adekunle Binuyo as the organization’s general manager. Binuyo becomes the first GM ever in franchise history for the Islanders and in Nigeria’s professional basketball.

Prior to joining the Islanders, Binuyo was a writer for Basketball Within Borders – a media enterprise he established in 2014 where he also served as a managing partner and editor. He promised to deliver the best of basketball to Lagos as he assumes duty:

“It is a great honour to be a part of a storied organization as the Lagos Islanders. I am delighted for the opportunity this position presents for me to put my vast knowledge and passion for basketball into practice. Lagos Islanders’ fans should look forward to the best of basketball as we prepare for the start of the 2016/2017 season.”

As the General Manager of the Islanders, Binuyo will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization which involves administration, marketing, public relations, and team management. The Islanders are at the vanguard of innovative trends in Nigeria’s professional sports and the new GM will be expected to continue the trend of steering the franchise to greater heights.

Damoye Oyesiku, Islanders’ President and co-owner said the hiring of Adekunle as the GM for the organization is part of a corporate plan to set the team in a new direction, particularly among millennials:

“Our hiring of Kunle signifies the new direction of Lagos Islanders to make our franchise the premier basketball brand in Africa and to encourage fan participation across all platforms targetting new trends with millennials.”

The Islanders currently operate in the African Basketball League (ABL) after migrating from the NBBF/DStv League early 2016 where it achieved series of feats for several years.

Established in 1984, the Lagos Islanders is arguably the premier basketball organization in Nigeria with many star athletes donning the signature yellow uniform at different times in the franchise’s stellar history. Former Islanders’ greats include Tunji Awojobi, Patrick Omo-Osagie, McFarlene Okonta, Tajudeen Adeyemi, Nurudeen Adepoju, Ugo Udezue, Gboyega Vidal, Lasun Fakeye, Tunji Soroye, and Ben Uzoh.
