Nigeria’s basketball Coach Will Voigt ends the ‘jollof debate’ in Africa

Do you know how many years it took Nigeria before it won the African title at the FIBA Africa Men’s Championship?

Forty-three years!

Well, barely two months after he was hired in 2015, William B. Voigt was able to accomplish a feat that had eluded the country since its first participation at the biennial Afrobasket in 1972 by defeating archrivals Angola at the 2015 FIBA Afrobasket in Tunisia.

Going by a tweet Voigt posted a few hours ago, it seems the former San Antonio Spurs video coordinator, might have very well ended the age-old African debate [West African, actually] regarding which country makes and serves the best jollof rice on the continent, once again adding ‘another feather to his crown’ as the Nigerian cliche goes. Voigt’s tweet was in reaction to an article published by Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, Ghanaian travel journalist, on npr.org detailing the ‘jollof rice war’ among West Africans.

Voigt joined Twitter last Friday and has racked up close to 300 followers since then. Besides tweeting about his love for “Nigerian Jollof Rice”, he has been using the platform to engage some of his professional colleagues and scout for more personnel to improve the Nigerian team.

We at Basketball Within Borders are, however, wondering if Voigt has been lucky to taste the king of all them all, which is the Nigerian Party Jollof Rice!!
